Acne scars are a frequent complication of cystic acne when not diagnosed and treated in early stages. They are unattractive and affect our confidence.

How many types of scars are there?

The most common scars are the atrophic ones. They appear as skin deepening dents and have various shapes. We rarely have hypertrophic scars/keloids which appear as hard, glossy, red and sometimes brown raised lesions.

How are atrophic scars treated?

• We use methods to peel the skin which secondarily also helps in the production of collagen (which “fills” the scars).
• We use techniques to "fill in" the scars.
• We excise them surgically.

What peeling methods are used to treat atrophic scars?

• Dermabrasion.
• Fractional-CO2 and Erbium-Yag Lasers.
• Chemical peelings.

How are acne scars "filled in"?

• With the use of injectable hyaluronic acid fillers.
• By activating the fibroblasts to produce collagen which is achieved :
• With subcision: Method in which the scar is "detached" with the use of a special device and gradually is filled with the collagen produced by the body.
• With the use of Lasers like Nd-Yag and Diode which leave the skin intact and act in deeper layers, activating the fibroblasts to produce collagen. They are commonly used to treat mild acne scars.
• With the use of (RF) radiofrequencies.

How are hypertrophic scars treated?

We use:
• Silicone patches which seem to inhibit fibroblast and collagen production and prevent from scarring.
• Intralesional injection of corticosteroids which seems to reduce the size of hypertrophic scars/keloids.
• Combination of intralesional corticosteroids and special modern laser systems which improve also the colour of the scars.
• Combination of intralesional corticosteroids and cryosurgery in which the crust (from cryosurgery) created, falls of along with the scar.
• Intralesional injection of chemotherapeutic substances.

How many sessions do I need?

The number of sessions is different for each patient and depends on the type of scars we treat. Usually, a combination of different techniques is needed because there are different types of scars in the same patient. Dr. Symeonidou will recommend the best treatment protocol for you.
