Laser hair removal is a modern, popular method of hair removal that both men and women prefer.
What is laser and how does it work in hair removal?
They are devices that emit concentrated light of a specific wavelength, which is absorbed by the melanin contained in the hair follicle. A thermochemical reaction is thus created that gradually leads to the destruction of the hair.
Are there different types of lasers for hair removal?
There are different types of laser that are used for hair removal. The most effective ones are those who produce wavelengths of light 640, 690, 755, 1064 nm (in the infrared spectrum) and are known as Alexandrite (the oldest ones in the Greek market), the Nd-Yag and diode. The most advanced systems combine different wavelengths for better results and can be safely used on both light and dark skins.
Which areas can they be applied?
They can be safely applied on any part of the face and body with unwanted hair (e.g. back, chest, ears, cheeks).
Is the treatment painful?
It is very well tolerated. Rarely, in highly sensitive people, the application of an anaesthetic cream may be needed prior to the treatment.
How is the treatment performed?
The hair should be 1-2mm short. Do not wax or epilate before having your laser treatment. The hair should not be long because all the energy of the laser is absorbed by strains of hair (the outer part). This "weakens" its effectiveness and increases the danger of creating skin burn. We usually "mark" the treated area with a white pencil so as to ensure it is fully scanned. Some hair "disappear" immediately, but most hair fall off gradually during the next days.
What will my skin look like afterwards?
There is redness and a mild, perifollicular edema (like small pimples) which depend on the hair thickness and disappear soon afterwards.
What should I pay attention to right after?
We recommend the use of moisturising creams and sunscreen as well as avoiding sun exposure or using solarium for a few days after the treatment.
How many sessions are usually needed so that I can have permanent results?
Unfortunately, no one can predetermine the number of sessions required for each person. Men need more sessions than women due to male hormones. Usually, maintenance sessions are needed, which depend on the treated area and vary from 2-3 times per year.
How often are the sessions repeated?
They are usually repeated every 4-6 weeks. This is determined by the life circle of the hair. However, as the hair weakens, the time between the sessions is increased.
Is laser hair removal dangerous?
Laser hair removal is safe. It is not some kind of radiation but light which acts selectively on the hair without affecting the underlying tissues and organs (e.g. lymph nodes, breast) and without being systematically absorbed by the body.
At what age can we begin laser hair removal?
We recommend to start laser hair removal at the age of 16 after we estimate that there is a ‘’balance’’ in the hormones of young girls. We can perform this treatment even in younger patients but we usually need more number of sessions to achieve a good result.
Are there side effects?
When the treatment is not conducted by a specialised in the use of laser hair removal person, it can lead to a burn, skin hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation.
Are there contraindications?
Laser hair removal is not effective on white hair. It is contraindicated in people with photo-allergy or suffering from some collagen diseases (e.g. systemic lupus erythematosus).
