How did I get the virus? Is it transmitted by the environment?
You may get herpes by having vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who already has herpes. It is not transmitted by exposure to surfaces such as toilet seats, bed sheets, knobs, fitness equipment.
When did I get the virus?
It is unknown. Usually, we cannot identify the time of infection. This is because some patients show symptoms after a few weeks and other after years of the infection.
When will it reappear?
We don't know. Over time, the outbreaks may become less frequent. The first visible signs or symptoms may appear years after the infection.
What causes recurrence of genital herpes?
• Stress
• Menstruation
• Sun exposure
• Other diseases
Can I pass herpes on to my partner?
Yes. The possibility is very high when there are symptoms. But this can be done even when there are no symptoms. Genital herpes can also be transmitted by people who have positive antibodies in laboratory testing but have never developed symptoms clinically.
How can I protect my partner?
• Avoid all sexual contact when you have an outbreak of genital herpes.
• Using a condom can reduce the chance of transmission in the phase that there are not symptoms.
Is it dangerous in case of pregnancy? What should I do?
In rare cases, (2%), a woman suffering from genital herpes can transmit the virus to the fetus and there may be complications. If the infection occurred during the third trimester of pregnancy or relapses shortly before delivery, caesarean section, is recommended. If only your partner suffers from herpes (genital or simplex), using condoms and avoiding all sexual contact during the 3rd trimester is recommended.
